About Episcopal Churches

The Episcopal Church is the American branch of the worldwide Anglican Communion, tracing its liturgical heritage to the Church of England. Episcopal worship centers on the Book of Common Prayer, a structured liturgy of Scripture readings, prayers, and the Eucharist. Theologically, Episcopalians occupy a "via media" — a middle way between Catholic and Protestant traditions — combining sacramental worship with Protestant emphasis on Scripture and grace. Episcopal congregations are known for intellectual openness, artistic worship (often with choral music and pipe organs), and commitment to social justice. The Church affirms both traditional and progressive expressions of faith within its broad tent.
